The Name “Curmudgeon Books”

The Name “Curmudgeon Books”

At first the store was not opened with an expectation of success; it was my opportunity to have a little used bookshop. The name was a tribute to all the old guys that owned used bookshops in the greater metropolitan area that were often a little cranky and rough around the edges. In 2008 / 2009, bookstores in general were closing everywhere new or used it didn’t matter, and this was my way of saying, no bookstores are of value and I wanted to have one before they were gone. The economy, downloading of books, poor management it didn’t matter the reason the bookstore as a business appeared to be going away, and yet I believed we still needed community bookstores. Regardless, if all the bookstores like music stores closed where would I go to find that book that’d explain history, theology, business or have a story that would transport me someplace else. My Dad died at fifty-six and I was fifty-one at the time so if I was going to have a bookstore, I believed it had to be now.

At the time I was reading a book about a man who fought to save his fathers books from the Nazis. He failed at his goal and his father’s books were destroyed and he was sent off to the camps. He came to America after the war and wrote how he had tried to save the old Curmudgeon’s books. The word stuck with me. Bookstores were closing everywhere, and the generation of old men and women who shared their books with me was going away as well. I wanted to take a stand even if a small one, so I opened a used book shop from the books in my basement. It’s my tribute to anyone who would save books and make them available to others, we’re all Curmudgeon’s.
